Tahoe Yacht Club's sail program is filled with activities for all classes, from novices to "old salts." And for those who are "between boats," there are always plenty of crewing opportunities.
Regattas are conducted under the US Sailing Association's Racing Rules of Sailing (R.R.S.) with PHRF ratings applying to all keelboat events. The spirit of competition may be serious, but camaraderie and corinthian spirit prevail over all events held on the "Lake in the Sky."
New Tahoe Yacht Club Membership Opportunity for Sailors!
On a sad note, we lost our dear friend, fellow sailor, sail committee chairman and Vice Commodore, Eric Conner in Oct 2004 in a tragic accident. Eric was very passionate about the Tahoe Yacht Club and its sailing programs and went out of his way to encourage participation and do what was necessary to make the program a success.
In his honor, the club has created a new membership opportunity for active sailors in our sailing programs. It has been named Conner’s Crew and works like this: Any sailor actively involved in any of the sailing programs at the club may be given a temporary membership for two years and pay just $400 per year dues for a maximum of two years. During this two year period the member will have full privileges with the exception of voting rights and reciprocal privileges at other clubs. At the end of the two year period they will be allowed to join as a full member at the appropriate age category and pay just a $200 initiation fee along with the regular dues. This is a great way to learn first hand the many benefits of the TYC so please spread the word to any sailors you may know. To request an Application for Conner's Crew memberships, please contact the club office.
Laser Regatta Series
This growing class sets sail on Monday evenings, at 6:00 p.m., off of Lake Forest near the U.S. Coast Guard's Station Tahoe. The Spring Series runs from Memorial Day for 7 Mondays until mid July; Summer Series goes another 7 until late August. There are a total of 14 weeks of racing in both a spring and summer series with some Olympic competitors in the fleet. This is a great opportunity for the young at heart or strong of body to enjoy an organized regatta format with lots of fun, both on and off the water.
The season is capped by the annual Kip Lar Rieu Laser Fleet Championship, open to all sailors, to be held the Lake Forest Boat Ramp. This is a 2 days event on the Saturday and Sunday after Labor day. Whether you camp for the weekend or just show up for the day, this is a not-to-miss event. See notice of race. For more information on the Laser Fleet, click here.
Beer Can Regatta Series
This popular Wednesday evening keelboat series runs for 14 weeks from two days after Memorial Day until late August, with spring, summer and overall series trophies awarded at the "Beer Can Ball" finale for skippers, crew and mates.
The competition, as always, is both friendly and challenging with the Club's Race Committee committed to giving both spinnaker and cruising classes a race, regardless of size, speed or skill. See notice of race. If you'd like to join a crew, but don't have a boat, please contact TYC at 530-581-4700 and we can put your name on our bulletin board. You don't have to be an experienced sailor to join the fun!
TYC's weekend regattas for PHRF boats are held on throughout the summer, with the Trans Tahoe and three Restaurant Regattas.
Annual Trans Tahoe Regatta
A classic since 1963, this July event has hosted skippers and their yachts from as far as San Diego and Klamath Falls, Oregon, who come to test their skill over a 25-plus mile course played out against Tahoe's unpredictable winds.
